There are temples and shrines dotted all around Varanasi and you will see people with these beautiful brass pots (something that Varanasi is famous for producing) taking oil or milk as offerings to the Hindi gods, particularly Lord Shiva whom, according to Hindi belief, made Varanasi (or Kashi, as it was known as then) his home after marrying his beloved Parvati.
