This young child’s eyes have ‘kajal’ underneath them. Why? Because she is so beautiful that she needs to be protected from people giving her the evil eye because they are jealous of her beauty. Ironically it also makes her eyes look even bigger and more beautiful! It’s a tradition in the rural and poorer areas of northern India, where they once used soot but now a kind of kohl.
Hi Eleanor,
We hope you are well and enjoying your stay in India. As always, we look forward to seeing your photos and seeing India through your eyes.
Take care,
Margo & Steve
