Mother and child, Varanasi

IMG_9937bI was sitting in my apartment working on some lesson plans today when I heard the intense sound of drums getting closer all the type. I grabbed my camera and went to my balcony and saw a procession go by. It appeared to be all women (apart from the percussionists) taking a covered tray of food to a wedding ceremony. They were all dressed in, presumably, their finest saris and they looked so elegant. It was so strange and very uplifting seeing such finery against a rather drab backdrop of poverty. Naturally I then headed out and followed the band. The women seemed happy and proud to have their photos taken. It was hard to choose my favourite but I loved the dignified expression of this lady, and the profile of the sweet child’s face too.
