Lucca – located in Tuscany, Italy – is an ancient walled city. Cars, other than those owned by the residents, are banned from within the old city walls. So here the bike is the transport of choice – which makes it a lovely place to visit. Especially if you can get hold of one yourself to traverse the 4km walls, flanked by ancient villas on the outside and a plethora of medieval churches and towers within. The only problem is knowing which way to look – straight ahead would make more sense, and the locals will thank you for it, but then you have to ask yourself – when again are you going to be treated to such views? Well, it sure beats cycling at the gym!
